Acrylic on real, untreated hide. The grown outline, the markings and the tangible texture of the material are part of every composition — no hide is like another, no work can be repeated.
The hide paints along.
The hides are natural hides, of the kind otherwise used as decoration for floor or wall — here they become the painting ground.
Markings, whorls and hair growth bring their own drawing — the painting takes them up instead of covering them over.
Some hides keep their natural colour, others are dyed — for instance in turquoise or gold — before the motif emerges.
„Code der Natur“
I work with a form that already exists — a pattern that nature itself created. The black spots are no coincidence but the character of a particular cow, its own visual code. I do not change it; I enter into a dialogue with it.
The white surface is snow to me — stillness, a space in which an image may arise. Out of the grown pattern I bring forth a herd of deer: as movement, as life, as memory rising from the matter. Thus the archaic joins the contemporary — just as early humans recognised images in the structure of the rock, I read them in the hide, with the awareness of the 21st century.
